A Must Read (I think...)
It may sound as an exaggeration especially in a time of abundance of various information. However, I do believe anyone (especially progressives) who is serious about understanding what happened to the country and civil discourse in recent decades should read this. It is brilliant essay by Lewis Lapham.
I know it is a bit long, but perhaps you can read it in pieces if you don't have time to read it at once(which was the case with me...). I am sure you will at least appreciate the quality of the language, regardless of the content or your own beliefs.
There is certainly more information on this, but this piece summarizes it nicely. Let me know if you are interested in reading more (or about the response being mounted on the opposite end of the political spectrum).
